Dr. van Susante

Van Susante Photo Dr. van Susante grew up in The Netherlands where he received his BS and MS degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in building/structural engineering from Delft University of Technology. He was invited to continue research at the Colorado School of Mines where he received a MS and PhD in Engineering Systems. He is currently a Senior Lecturer at Michigan Technological University where he is founder and faculty advisor of the Mining INnovation Enterprise. Since 1999 he has found many ways to combine civil engineering and aerospace/mechanical engineering which includes lunar base design studies, lunar telescope design studies, lunar and martian robotic construction/mining equipment design and economic studies (including building and testing prototypes), In Situ Resource Utilization work to determine what local resources can be used on other planetary surfaces and soil-machine interaction modeling for compaction and excavation purposes. As part of these studies he was a NASA Faculty Fellow and spent a summer at Kennedy Space Center working with the Surface Systems Office. His latest work includes the study of landing pad construction methods and robotic equipment design to use local rocks to build a landing pad on the Moon or Mars.
